Education & Promotion

The TCIHRC has a duty to increase understanding and awareness of human rights in the Turks and Caicos Islands. To achieve this, we provide support for educational activities and research. We are also focused on fostering a culture of respect for human rights through comprehensive education and proactive promotion. We believe that awareness and understanding of human rights are essential for their protection.

To ensure the integration of human rights into everyday practices throughout the TCI, we prioritize the following critical components:

1. Public Awareness Campaigns

• Media Campaigns: Utilizing radio, social media, and print media to increase the public’s awareness of their human rights
• Public Events: Organizing events such as Human Rights Day celebrations, open house events, etc.
• Publications: Creating and distributing informational materials, such as brochures, posters, articles, and reports, to educate the public

2. Educational Programs

• School Programs: Develop school modules and provide teaching materials on human rights for primary and secondary schools
• Youth Engagement: Running programs specifically designed for youth to empower them to become human rights advocates

3. Training Workshops

Our training workshops are designed to build capacity and understanding of human rights among key stakeholders:

• Government Officials: Sensitization training is provided to prevent human rights infractions
• Private Sector: Sensitization training is provided to prevent human rights infractions

4. Community Engagement

We work directly with communities to address specific human rights concerns and promote inclusivity:

• Open House Events: Visiting all islands to enhance access to the TCIHRC
• Town Hall Meetings: Hosting meetings to create dialogue with the public and bring about awareness of proposed changes in legislation that will respect and uphold their human rights
• Cultural Programs: Promoting human rights through cultural and artistic expressions, such as theater, music, and visual arts
• Outreach Programs: Engaging with marginalized and vulnerable groups to ensure their voices are heard and their rights protected

The TCIHRC offers a variety of resources and materials to support human rights education and promotion:

• Educational Toolkits: Comprehensive kits to support educators in teaching human rights are available upon request
• Brochures and pamphlets: Practical guides on human rights issues for different audiences are readily available
